“That’s when there were still prop planes, and so it was a 9 hour flight from Hawaii to California, and then another 5 hour flight from California to Kansas City, and then a 3 hour bus ride from Kansas City to Iowa to go to school. So, not ever leaving the small town I was from and then venturing out by myself to do all this stuff, it was a real challenge.”
